THE GREEN CONNEXION +

What Ever Happened to Green Building Alternatives?

In 1994, as a pioneer in the Green industry, I introduced the Green Connection column in the San Antonio Express-News and the Green Connection television show which is still running on Digital Access Channel 20. A few years later, I introduced the Green Connection exihibits at Texas Home & Garden Shows and later created the Green Building Show offering free continuing education classes for building/design professionals and interested end users.

Interest in alternative building and system design has dropped and emphasis is currently on expensive energy systems. Wind, Solar, Hydro and upgraded mechanical systems are important. But what happened to the alternative building systems: compressed earth block, earth shelters, structural insulated panels, insulated concrete forms and other materials that automatically lower energy usage?

They seem to have become a part of history, but should they be?
Check out the websites on the left and learn what is available for new and renovated structures. Most have  innate insulation properties and require a minimum of mechanical back-up energy saving dollars and reducing pollution.

STRIPPERS STARS & PRESIDENTS -My New Book

My recollectiions of STRIPPERS STARS & PRESIDENTS history in Chicago, Houston and San Antonio from the mid-40s to the early 90s. Those were the days when  strippers had to have a "gimmick", politics still included the Al Capone gang, and stars plugged their movies with on stage appearances at the movie palaces of the day like the Chicago, Oriental and State & Lake theaters in Downtown Chicago.

I interviewed lots of them, booked some and crossed political paths of Mayor John Daley (the first of the Chicago Daley mayors), President Lyndon Johnson and his prominent aid Jack Valenti, President George H. W. Bush, and his teen aged son, to-be president, George W. Bush.

Health Club tycoon Richard L. Minns, subject of the TV film Sleeping with the Devil, and at age 79, currently living in Israel as a sculptor in bronze and a few other
shady characters were a part of my Houston public relations agenda.

STRIPPERS STARS & PRESIDENTS is a fun book reviewing times when print and electronic meda welcomed pr people and took advantage of the material they offered.
The book is short, has lots of pictures and will bring a smile or two as the I relive those bygone days. Below are just a couple of my memories.  You can purchase
the book on line at Amazonbooks.com, Barnes & Noble .com or The Twig Bookstore in
San Antonio. Any quesions? ask the author: mailto:rzheck@cs.com

CREATIVE FINANCING: HISTORICAL PRESERVATION + SUSTAINABILITY

Updating a book originally written in 1996,I find that none of the principles have changed that much. There are still financial, moral and evironmental benefits from combining these two most important elements in building and rehabing. Every city in the world historically prominent old buildings and it only makes good sense to preserve them, conserve materials, honor history and partner them with LEED and Energy Star in the process to protect their integrity..and the planet.

This website is still a work in progress. Thanks for stopping by and come back
again. I'm still learning how to improve this website and appreciate your patience. I do try to change it at least every two weeks, so do visit again.
